Protecting coral reefs

AD Port Group

Situation

At AD Ports Group, environmental sustainability is at the core of the Group’s strategy and growth agenda. In 2021, AD Ports Group took on the responsibility of moving coral reef colonies from Ras Ghanada in the Gulf to safer waters near Khalifa Port. As a highly sensitive ecosystem, using the correct methodology was essential, which is why AD Ports Group went through a rigorous process to appoint the right teams to support the tricky migration.

Solution

Through close coordination with local agencies such as the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), AD Ports Group managed to successfully relocate more than 500 corals.

Outcome

The relocation of live coral reduced the direct loss of the sensitive coral marine biota. The coral will be monitored over a three-year period and the data collected will be used to research multiple aspects related to corals. The results will be discussed in a technical paper that is set to be issued by AD Ports Group in due course.
